bocs choice - Simeon Coxe

28 November 2008

From the Wilds of Eastern Tennessee and nurtured in the Big Easy, comes Simeon Coxe the Third. An innovator of Electronic Music and avant garde performance art . His two releases on the Kapp label under the guise of Silver Apples utilized a maelstrom of home made electronic gadgetry, was heralded by the New York Post as “Simple weird magic. It’s pop from outer space”. Yet his influence in the shaping of electronic and Techno forms of music are unquestionable. Not to mention the musical output being a prime example of Performance art and Pop music effortlessly merging together.

Although it may be the Velvet Underground or Elephant Memory that were given the task of entertaining New York’s creative elite in the Factory, Simeon collabortaed with the purveyor of Pop Art in his hey day. So much so Andy Warhol made a print of Simeon, that adorned the cover of one of his later releases.

Sevan’s work goes on bocs

27 November 2008

One of our members, Sevan Garon Nigogosian has uploaded a couple of pictures of his web on his bocs profile. Sevan’s work is driven by gesture and expressive mark-making, inspired by Frank Auerbach and Anthony Tapies.

Some pretty interesting stuff, so clicky here to pop along and have a look.

If you’re interested in seeing more from Sevan, he’s got his own site filled with loads of photos.

art pickup

26 November 2008

Well, just got back from the gruelling trek down to Cardiff to pick up some pieces for the christmas bocs nadolig exhibition from two of the bocs choice artists, Robert Pepperell and Poked Studio. Surely there should be an easier way to get from North Wales down to South Wales?

Anyway, whilst I was in the Cardiff School of Art and Design, looking for Robert Pepperell, I had a good nosy and peeked into the studios, it looks like they do some interesting stuff down there. The pick-up there was relatively quick, even if there was a hairy moment in the lift.

After a spot of sushi, we went round to Poked Studio and picked up two of his pieces, the cloud’s revenge and March of Progress. Whilst I was there, I got to have a nice chat with Jon, met his partner and asked lots of questions about his work and how to work as a graphic artist/illustrator.

It was unfortunate that whilst I was trying to show Jon some of the photos from Dan Ponting (one of the artists we’ve had in the past) when the broken image on Dan’s website came up, just as his partner walked in. She must have thought I was showing him some strange stuff.

I’m really thankful that they gave me so much time… I hope I didn’t get in the way too much.

bocs choice - Elgan Jones

26 November 2008

Elgan and me were in sixth form together, he was a year younger than me, but I always found his work interesting. When I was in my final year in Manchester he started studying there, so I’m interested to see how his work has evolved since being there.

Update: Elgan has written to us with more details describing his work, there are also some photos.

Super Secret Souvenir

14 November 2008

I’m beginning to get quite excited about our upcoming launch. (*ahem* 5th of December) Mainly because this exhibition will be filled with quality work, chosen because our members admire them.  So it must be good.

Also, we’re all working on a secret project… all of the visitors to our exhibition get to take home a little souvenir.

I’d love to tell you what it is, but I can’t… It’s secret.

So, if the idea of seeing some excellent artwork isn’t enough to lure you in… then think of the freebies!
