about bocs
bocs is a group of fresh young artists, and we’ve opened up shop!
bocs is Charles Yorke, Gethin Wavell Lloyd Jones, Huw Erddyn, Iestyn Owen, James Toms, Meirion Alan Ginsberg, Rhys Lloyd Jones, Sally Kwong, Sevan Garo Nigogosian, Siân Green and Yvonne Tsang.
In fancier language, bocs is a supportive network of young artists encompassing visual arts, music and performance. Their objective is to establish a focal point to act as a catalyst for excellence in young contemporary art.
Currently, bocs is…
…busy organising our launch and the christmas bocs nadolig exhibition, which is nice because bocs members get to exhibit work from artists that we admire.
A bit of background
In 2006 Dafydd Hardy, along with his co-director Richard Thomas, decided to turn the basement of their offices on the castle square into an arts space to showcase for young artists, to counteract the drain of young art graduates from the area by providing a nucleus for exhibition and exchange of ideas.
This new young cooperative represents the core of Oriel Dafydd Hardy past exhibitors/or associates – they are the nascent group of a future art movement in Gwynedd.
bocs in the future
We’ve got quite a few interesting things going on for the future, most importantly, we’ve got big plans for Oriel Pendeitch, and we intend to play a role in the forthcoming Celtic Film Festival.
Oriel Pendeitch
Oriel Pendeitch is currently being refurbished and bocs will be holding an activity there to celebrate its opening in spring 2009. It’s a gallery space on two floors, right opposite the gates of Caernarfon Castle. It has enough space to take larger exhibitions, some studio space and will also incorporate a sculpture yard.
Oriel Pendeitch has great potential, and in the past has been sadly underused. We’re hoping that the launch the bocs will convince Gwynedd Council that there is in enough energy and enthusiasm from local young artists to turn Oriel Pendeitch into a hub of creative activity that will benefit the whole of North Wales.
It’s early days, but we’re hoping to persuade Gwynedd Council to let us make use of Oriel Pendeitch. It’s not confirmed yet, and we’ve got a long way to go so we may not even get the place, but wouldn’t it be great if we did?

Celtic Film Festival
The Celtic Film Festival is an annual three-day celebration of broadcasting, film talent and excellence from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany. Its aim is to promote the languages and cultures of the Celtic countries on screen and in broadcasting.
They will be coming to Caernarfon for the first time on the 25th of March 2009 for their 30th anniversary and bocs will be collaborating with Caernarfon Events Group (CEG) to welcome them.
