St David’s College - Art & Design Show

GCSE and A Level pupils ST DAVID’S COLLEGE
Private View 4th November 7pm - 9pm
Then open to the public … 5-25 November 2008

Banksy, the urban graffiti artist turned corporate squillionaire, recently stated, “The holy grail is to spend less time making the picture than it takes for people to look at it.”

In contrast, Michelangelo more humbly supposed, “If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.”

Given the opportunity to amble through the hugely impressive Art workshops at St David’s College, one could not fail to be impressed by the sheer dedication and hard work of the pupils whose finished articles you will see in this exhibition today. From charcoal to sculpture, from watercolour to photography, the passion, purpose, pride and soul of each artist is evident in abundance.

Whilst the finished pieces are astonishing in their quality and creativity, I am more impressed with the evolution and development that I know goes into their formation. The Art department operates a generous ‘open door’ policy during and after school hours and the teachers go to extraordinary lengths to fuel the imagination and facilitate the practicalities that lead to the creation of artwork of this distinction.

I am so very proud to be associated with a school and Art department that motivates young people to produce work of this quality. Whilst you stroll around this exhibition and muse over what may have inspired the artists, consider whether they would associate themselves with Banksy’s flippant philosophy or whether they would suggest that motivation, endeavour and freedom to express are the keys to unlocking their potential.

Enjoy the exhibition.
